1. OBAMA!!! - an amazing chapter in American History
2. I know, I know - Brazil - WOW ….but is anything really better than SF? - I struggle to stay here financially but it is so worth it
3. Madison and I will make a more frequent habit of sitting at the bar at Firefly
4. I’ll finally have you teach me to ride my bike without complete fear in SF
5. Brazil isn’t going anywhere - I like the do both, buy a return ticket idea - maybe you always do long vacations in Brazil yearly
6. With the income you can make in SF - you can travel to Brazil and many more places
7. Granted Portugese is the MOST beautiful language - but Mandarin and Spanish are much more utilitarian and easier to practice in SF
8. We do miss you Jay!!!

I spent 4 1/2 hours in New York because it was fun and challenging and had great food and because I wanted to say I lived in New York for X years, but ultimately the challenge wasn’t worth the payoffs. I spent all my time there in a holding pattern. I was so busy being challenged it was hard to just maintain. I should have left after 6 months and got on with my life.

Maybe your situation is totally different. But maybe you should stop trying to challenge yourself and go for the easier comfortable life. I know comfort is better for me than challenge because there are always challenges…going for comfort gives me reserves to fight the challenges.

This is way too serious for your blog.

Just don’t hold out in Brazil for the badge of honor of having lived there for a certain amount of time. The girls and the Portugese are much better reasons. As for the food? Learn to cook it so you can have it anywhere!

Stay for at least a year. Being an illegal alien doesn’t seem to be too pressing an issue. I echo the comments made above, of riding out the emotions of the move to make a clear decision after the indecision has passed. And it will. You’re already ahead of the curve in that you’ve got a community of friends in what seems like a new adventure every day. The adventure aspect can be exhausting after awhile, not dissimilar to trip(make all the newness stop) fatigue. These reservations are part of the deal and should not inform ones direction in the least. SF and the love will be there and we all know, the velvet glove of austin is so hard to leave that most of the people you know will still be here. Except for me of course.

I think that if you go back to San Francisco, you’ll immediately be more comfortable because you know that place - it’s “your fair city.” But I know you love the whole challenge aspect of Brazil. Which is more important to you?

Also, just because you bought a ticket to SF doesn’t mean you can’t go back (yes it’s expensive but blahdibloo you’ll figure it out).

Also, while you’re buying things, buy a ticket to Austin.

Or stay there until they kick you out of the country.

reasons to stay:

1) I didn’t visit you much in SF, and if I’m not going to see you, it should be that you’re in a badass faraway land, not just that I’m lazy/too busy

2) double prove to fernando that people can and do move and he’s a pussy for still not moving out of austin

3) ITS FUCKING BRAZIL

4) I’m a bastard and still haven’t put your gift in the mail, and you need to still be there when it finally arrives

reasons to return:

1) I’m not gonna make it to Brazil this new years, I will however be going through SF. There is admittedly much higher visit chances if you come back

2) so you can tell fernando in person how much of a pussy he is for still not moving out of austin

3) SF is yer home

4) if you come back, it will be much easier for me to give you presents

5) I bet you can’t even buy Fable 2 or Fallout 3 there yet, if ever? I dunno how that shit works. either way, gamefly already gave me both here in the nice USofA

6) you’re j fucking beaman, and are so goddamn rad that adding on “a year in brazil” isn’t really the biggest deal. Besides, you can just lie.

Buy a ticket for Thailand, nothing has changed in SF. There are better things to learn to miss in Asia, I think.

I think the illegal alien thing is a biggie — I wouldn’t stay unless you can iron that out. But if you can…it sounds to me like you want to stay. You’ve weathered the worst of the adjustment now and are about to reap the benefits. Money is something that can be worked out. Also, the SF economy is about to go down the crapper…along with the rest of the country. Then again, BH may not be exempt either. So I don’t know. You need to figure out that one thing that determines the decision…what’s most important?

Why not do both? Go back to SF in January, but before you even get on the plan buy a return ticket from SF to Brazil, say Late-Jan till June. That way you won’t back out of going back. Every time I’ve lived abroad (Czech Republic and now England) I’ve stayed at least a year. The difference between living somewhere 6 months and a year is one is a really great experience, the other is a part of your life that is very evident in who you are.

Those are my thoughts one expat to another. But at the end of the day you’ve got to look at your life and what do you want it to be. If what you want it to be happens in Brazil, then stay, if what you want it to be is in SF then go. (I’m in the same boat right now, shhhh)

i think it’s good to start thinking about yr options but you do have time– a lot of things could change by jan 13.

making those lists is an excellent place to start.

also… i’ve heard that you should stay in a place for at least a year to get the full experience. i have no statistics to back this up, nor have i lived abroad for a year. but it’s just what a lot of my friends have said… and it rings true for me, somehow.

ha ha, now unhelpful is this comment? at least i didn’t say “i miss you!” (even though i do!).

I wouldn’t stay anywere as an illegal alien (just because I like to be able to shout that I’m so right and they’re so wrong, when it’s necessary, and it’s impossible to do so when you’re in an illegal situation).

Otherwise, I think that you can postpone the decision, no? See how much your homesickness will worsen when Christmas comes. Have in mind that April-May-June is the prime time (wheatherwise) in BH, so you might want to be there to enjoy it.

And I’ll be back in January 30!
